CGI and generative AI can both produce an impossible product scene, but they offer different kinds of control. The right choice starts with your brief: does the campaign need an exact object from many angles, a surprising atmosphere, or a mixture of both?
Use controllable geometry when accuracy leads
A carefully built 3D model lets a production team work with explicit geometry, materials, lighting and camera positions. That can be useful when packaging must stay consistent across a family of shots or a mechanism needs a planned animation. Model preparation and material work take time. Ask whether the quote includes creating the model, using one you supply, and delivering editable source files.
Use generative imagery where exploration helps
AI can be useful for exploring a visual territory, imagined scenery or atmospheric transitions. It still needs art direction and quality control. Small lettering, logos, jewellery details and repeating objects may drift between frames. Do not approve an image only because its overall mood looks impressive. Check whether it represents the actual product and whether the same result can be maintained throughout the edit.
Combine methods instead of forcing a choice
A hybrid workflow might place an approved product cutout into an imagined environment, then use conventional compositing for shadows, reflections and typography. Another might use AI references to guide a controlled 3D scene. Ask the studio to explain which elements are generated, modelled, filmed or supplied. The viewer should see a coherent image, not a visible mismatch between techniques.
Write the acceptance criteria before production
For a perfume campaign, list the bottle silhouette, cap finish, liquid colour, label and logo as separate approval points. State required angles and formats, and identify which surfaces can be stylised. Agree whether the scene is a creative fantasy or an accurate demonstration. A spectacular concept should not imply a product capability that the real item does not have.
Practical checklist
- Supply clean product references and any existing 3D assets.
- Identify details that cannot change.
- Confirm source files, formats, revisions and usage in the quote.
Is AI always cheaper than CGI?
No. Repeated corrections to a complex product or exact animation can outweigh initial speed. Compare the complete approved deliverable and the control needed, not the tool label.
