A surprising opening is useful only when it attracts the audience your product can help. Write the complete message first: who it is for, what problem it addresses, what evidence you can show and what happens next. Then shorten the opening without changing the promise.
Choose a hook you can prove
Try a visible problem, an unexpected demonstration or a useful comparison. A storage product could open with the actual clutter it solves rather than a vague promise to change someone’s life. Use real product behaviour and authorised claims. Avoid fabricated personal experiences, fake customer reactions and unsupported superlatives.
Keep the body connected
If the opening asks a question, answer it quickly. If it shows a result, explain the mechanism. Record the demonstration in a way that makes important details visible on a phone. TikTok recommends a hook, body and close, with vertical framing and attention to interface safe areas; use those principles as a production check rather than a formula for guaranteed reach.
Test one change at a time
Create a small set of openings attached to the same body and call to action. Label each version by the idea, not just a file number. Compare viewing behaviour alongside enquiries or purchases, accounting for audience and spend. A hook that earns views but attracts the wrong people is not automatically the winner.
Practical checklist
- Write the proof before the hook.
- Keep UI areas clear.
- Label variants and compare business outcomes.
How many seconds should a hook last?
There is no universal ideal. Make the value understandable early, then use the shortest opening that naturally introduces the demonstration.
